A few months ago I had the pleasure of talking to dozens of Product Hunt users. One common remark was how Product Hunt is part of their daily news routine.
Internally, we knew this as well via our data and push notification metrics. When something significant happens in tech (e.g., acquisitions or big product launches) we often send out a push notification linking back to the related product's page. Admittedly, this page doesn't always best explain what happened at that moment.
Today we're launching a new experimental app called Sip.
Sip delivers daily tappable tech news and stories. Every weekday it surfaces the most interesting and important tech stories of the day, from breaking news to profiles on favorite tech products. While allowing makers and the community to remain productive by having a single daily digest to review on your own time.
Let us know what you think. I look forward to your feedback as we continue to improve Sip.
P.S. Sip is built alongside the awesome Product Hunt community using Ship, our toolkit for makers. If you would like early access to future Sip betas, and provide feedback directly to me, you can join the group here.
P.S.S. We’re also releasing a huge update to the Product Hunt mobile app, soon available on iOS and Android. If you’d like early access, subscribe here.
@chadwhitaker Wow!! this is huge news. A treat for all android users from PH finally. Cant love this enough. would give hands on feedback. quick question do we get to choose the interests in SIP or its same for everyone? had'nt followed the building process.
@chadwhitaker @sagar868 Same for everyone right now, but we're considering domain-specific notifications or channels!
@chadwhitaker Wow, nice app. Usually, I using a few telegram channels to get notified of news once a day, but now it looks like I will use this app.
@chadwhitaker @nickabouzeid That sounds good!
@chadwhitaker Finally! I've been waiting to see what you were planning after our conversation :) Looks sweet! I'm all about this.
@chadwhitaker does Sip use PH for its source? If so, do you think I could use Sip as a distilled version of PH so I get fewer notifications for product launches?
@ridderingand_ Thanks, Michael. You were part of the inspiration 😄

@chadwhitaker this app is the best thing I have seen in media recently
@chadwhitaker Interesting concept, I'm really interested in the how curated news can change the way we consume web content information.
I have some feeling about UX flow that things have to be vertical(scroll) instead of horizontal which needs to interact with everything.
Scale issues. For example, I am interested in SaaS and not VR/Robots/Gadgets. I think @inside have some interesting model which may be implemented here.
@chadwhitaker Just downloaded the app. Stoked to get my nutritious bits of tech news!
@chadwhitaker love this product! It's just fun to use. I did find myself intuitively trying to swipe instead of tap to skip to the next story if I wasn't very interested in the one I was tapping thru. Anyone else find themselves wanting this kind of feature?
It's been so fun to play with various builds over the past few months, @chadwhitaker has done an incredible job.
We're excited to build new types of content to help improve your daily news routine and draw attention to under-reported stories and products that deserve it.
What kind of news stories would you like to see most? What types of stories and products deserve attention?
We'd love to hear from you (and hope you enjoy Sip)!
@chadwhitaker @nickabouzeid Non tech startups' news.
@chadwhitaker @nickabouzeid how will the content be curated/chosen?
@chadwhitaker @chrismessina The entire content and community team will work together to curate and write the stories.
We're also hiring to help bolster our content team!
@chadwhitaker @nickabouzeid breaking news would be good. But I should be able to choose how many push notifications I want to receive at most per day/week. Also if I miss or dismiss them, there should be a list of notifications in the App so can go back not have the FOMO and have keep multiple notifications on my phone's screen
@chadwhitaker @nickabouzeid Well done and congratulations! Looks very well built and minimalistic enough to feel comfortable :)
So fan of the domain name... 😄
@jpatlab Absolutely loved it too! 😀
Great work to both @chadwhitaker and the Product Hunt team!
I loved having the ability to share my thoughts with Chad during the beta builds and look forward to seeing what comes from Sip in the next few months. For now, I will just wait for the stories to roll in 🙌🏻
Really like it so far. But it doesnt look like I can share or forward stories through other channels which I always do.
@ferminrp Thanks, Fermin! Adding sharing to the app next week. Looking forward to feedback on the stories after you finish reading one.
This is a cool idea. On the face of it, it looks like what I wanted Quartz to be.
Out of curiosity, how tied in to PH is this? Will it only include news if the company/product has been on PH? And will it surface less mainstream news from smaller companies/makers that have been on PH?
P.S really like the branding 👍
@marsh931 The branding is alllll @chadwhitaker 👏
We'll include PH links to posts where it's applicable, whether or not they've been on PH (though we'll aim to have everybody on PH!).
@marsh931 I used my emoji keyboard for inspiration 🥤
If this is Product Hunt taking a page 🗒out of Ev William's new "Today's Highlights" series on Medium... then sign me up! 😍Love the idea of truly at-a-glance style curated news feeds and excited to come back to this post in a few days to leave my feedback.
Nice work, looks great!
@daviswbaer Appreciate it! 🙏
I love Sip and all of the (tech related) news stories the app provides. The news bits are short but very informative. Next to messaging apps and HQ Trivia 😄 I think this is the only app with push notifications I love to receive on a daily basis. Great job!
@angeliquesocial Thank you! 🙏
Really like it so far. The only thing is i always find myself tapping the screen outside the little button at the bottom right as it is in other story formats.
Edit: Just got the update. It 's a lot better now.
@nafetswirth Woo! 🙌
I have been using Sip for a while now, but never received any notifications - that's probably because it's being officially launched only today. Let's see how this goes!
@arunsathiya We've been sending out stories every day at 5PM for the past week, stirring in @chadwhitaker to take a closer look.
@arunsathiya Odd. Try redownloading the app directly from the App Store/Play Store. If you don't receive one today, let me know. 🙌
Congrats on the launch guys!
I liked how you used the top right corner space to solve the progress bar on iPhone X — just one thing though: an incomplete red bar in that area is a mental trigger for low battery, for me, as well as a lot of people I believe. Might be better to not use the Sip red shade for that bar :)
@anant90 So true! I'm going to do another round on that progress bar 😄
Just from first glance, these stories seem a lot like Twitter stories. My question: how is Sip better? Looks very nice, nice work @chadwhitaker
This is amazing. Now I’ll have time for tech, anime and my Nintendo.
Don’t judge me.
Great job!! The link mentioned to try it out in the early access is broken not working !! Super useful😊
@ayush_chandra Hey Ayush! Which link are you referring to?
@chadwhitaker the early access link which you have mentioned in your introduction
@ayush_chandra Hmm. Both seem to work on my end. Try these direct links instead:
@rrhoover First you ship Ship, now you ship Sip. What's next? Slip? Snip? Hoping it's not Strip!
@daviswbaer Skip. We skip!

I've been beta testing this app for about a week or so, and I love it. @chadwhitaker and the PH team have done a fantastic job with the app, and take community suggestions seriously. I love catching up on news i might have missed, and Sip gives you just enough to go out and do more research. Great job @chadwhitaker @nickabouzeid @rrhoover! 👏🏼👏🏼
@nickabouzeid @rrhoover @lamaalrajih Thanks Lama! And thanks for all the feedback during the beta. 😄
Lama Al Rajih
@nickabouzeid @rrhoover @chadwhitaker anytime!
Lama Al Rajih
@nickabouzeid @rrhoover @chadwhitaker any chance we can get individual responses to stories? or a comment/chat-like feature on each 'tap' on a story?
@nickabouzeid @chadwhitaker @lamaalrajih I really like that idea, although perhaps we push the conversation out to Twitter.
Lama Al Rajih
@nickabouzeid @chadwhitaker @rrhoover So, a share to Twitter button? Tweeting the image (tap?) would be cool, too.
Congrats PH team, especially @chadwhitaker - awesome job so far! I've been lucky enough to test this via Ship as I signed up! Really excited to see where Sip goes - I've provided some initial feedback already (like swiping to the through a story rather than clicking the arrow button).
@gadgick Glad you like the change, Nick. 😁
This is what https://inside.com should be
@marcelc63 inside did the mobile app but metrics was bad. Personally prefer read them in one letter. @rrhoover please make iOS PH app play gifs and work offline
Love it, the Instagram Stories format is perfect for this kind of content!
Humble feature request: while reading a story, swipe down to dismiss (IG-style)
