Hey, it’s been a while since we’ve made updates to mobile. Today we’re releasing a new member to the Product Hunt app family – an Android app. The app was rewritten and designed for simplicity and speed to make it easier to stay up-to-date on the day’s new product launches.
We hope you enjoy it and please add your feedback and feature ideas here. Also if you’d like early access to new builds, subscribe to our Ship page - https://www.producthunt.com/upcoming/product-hunt-mobile 😸
@devladinci any plans for iPhone X? 😬
@devladinci @prokotasic It's optimized for iPhone X!
-Sent from iPhone X
@devladinci Android onboarding still has a typo, "friedly" instead of "friendly"
@devladinci Also, still showing the wrong cards when clicked (Android, Google Pixel)
@banada Ah I know, this is an issue with ReactNative's flat list.
@devladinci Curious given your ground-up rewrite: what stack did you use? (React Native + GraphQL by any chance?).
@daniel_oertli Yep 100% React Native, GraphQL in future, still using REST 😅
@devladinci super tiny gray font absolutely sucks
Awesome! Can we scroll back to the top of today’s list by tapping on the Home icon now? 😛
@lorismaz There is no Home Icon anymore :/
@lorismaz no home button trend :)
I’m still seeing 3.8.9 in the App Store...
@mzuvella Taking a little bit to propagate. Give it a bit 🙏
Is there no way to add products to our saved lists via the mobile app? Can't seem to find it.
@hrbrt not yet but this is one of the things we want to add asap as many use the mobile app to "bookmark" things they want to check out later, sometimes on their desktop.
@rrhoover Thanks. I tried submitting this via the TestFlight email but it told me the address you folks supply in the app doesn't exist.
@hrbrt uh-oh! Can you please confirm which email you tried to email?
@rrhoover TF uses firstname.lastname@example.org by default.
@rrhoover @producthunt @hrbrt Oh my bad, will update it
@devladinci that’s a problem if TF testers can’t send feedback. 😉
@hrbrt shake your device, or go to settings ’contact support.’
Mhm, I'm seeing version 1.0.20 on Android 😕. Latest update was on February 20...
@alainpascalr They are called it "Product Hunt 4.0" to match the web version, I guess. I can confirm the latest version on Android is 1.0.20 too.
@alainpascalr yeah, seems like that's the latest version!
@alainpascalr @traveler Might be taking some time to propagate. Looking into it!
@alainpascalr @traveler @nickabouzeid Latest update is 1.0.20, right?
@arunsathiya yes. That's what I have.
Thank you for making this app! I have been using it on my Android since a few weeks, and I absolutely love the design! The wait was worth it. 😻
@arunsathiya Thank you! 🙌
Congrats @devladinci ·@rrhoover @chadwhitaker on the new version + new addition to the app family! I've been testing the new app for a week or so (via the PH Mobile Ship page 👉 go subscribe https://www.producthunt.com/upcoming/product-hunt-mobile). So much quicker + can do more! Yay!
@gadgick appreciate your support!
What happened to lists?
@chiancheng by lists do you mean collections? Unfortunately it didn't make it into this release but it's coming soon!
@rrhoover but you didn’t remove them, did you!!? The ability to save our favorite products in different collections is one of Product Hunt’s features. Please don’t undervalue it!
@rrhoover this makes me sad. —signed sincerely, superuser
@iherreros You can still make collections via PH website 🙂
@iherreros agreed! I can’t live without my collections. So many products saved, actually my most regular use of PH.
@rrhoover awww... that's a shame! Honestly the feature that makes me able to remember all the products that I need to use at a later stage. Please bring it back to mobile! It's actually even more important to have it on mobile than on desktop. It's quite often I just browse for inspiration on mobile!!
Finally, Product Hunt is available on Android
And the notifications and screens seems to load faster than the iOS app.
What next? We are looking forward to see a way to chat (via direct message) with other community members.
🔥 A way to add products directly from the app would be awesome!
@adithya interesting idea! We're considering bringing 1-on-1 chat to PH but want to ensure there's a strong use case for it, not just another inbox for people to manage.
@adithya @rrhoover I'd love this feature
Sir Steven Alexander
Whoa! What a pleasant surprise! Great work!
Thanks a bunch to the developers.. 🎉
The superior operating system now included... bout time.
Pretty good! I like the simplicity.Finally available on Android. But I'm kind of disappointed to see the Android version being released when it's still so unpolished :-(
@pluslucas_ Hey Lucas! Is there something specific you're having troubles with? cc @devladinci
@nickabouzeid @devladinci hey Nick! I sent an email a while ago with a detailed list of things I would love to see ironed out in the Android app, but I never got an answer. Here's a quick list of some of the things that I noticed in the app:
- Inconsistent icon styles
- Unnecessary boxing around buttons
- Not using the Material Design keylines (I think this is pretty important on Android)
- Typing a comment while also scrolling through the comments is very buggy
- Missing Adaptive Icon
I would love to provide detailed feedback through email, if it would be used!
@nickabouzeid @devladinci @pluslucas_ +1 to everything said here. Stands out awkwardly on the platform from a design and UX perspective.
@nickabouzeid @pluslucas_ @tsmith I have them on my todo, Android is new area, so I was pretty sure that first-time won't be perfect :) About adaptive icon, @chad can help here :)
Android finally! Great job!
Offline mode for iPhone. Gif images on media section. Open image in media on which i tap not the first one... mentions... guys seriously mobile web version is better than the app
@vladkorobov appreciate the honesty, Vlad!
We had GIFs playing in the gallery but found major performance issues on many devices. We're going to revisit this (as someone that appreciates GIF explainers) but opted to remove the animation for now as that's much better than a crashing app. 😊
Good catch with opening the gallery to the image you tap on.
@rrhoover at least don’t block me when I lost the internet - there is no any reason for that dumb splash, and activity tab is just useless - nothing happens there.
@rrhoover I would be ok if you open Gif full screen in a webview or even open product hunt page in safari. Right now there is no way to see big GIF like here https://www.producthunt.com/posts/the-new-new-new-techcrunch?utm_campaign=email-notification&utm_medium=email&utm_source=mention#comment-581341
I finally understand why it took so long to optimize the app for iPhone X!
I have been testing this app for some time now. Its 🔥. Only thing missing is night mode.
