Very cool @mulligan! What are the advantages of using Hangouts Chat over Slack? What features are you most excited about?
@mulligan @nickabouzeid I'd like to know this as well. I've been using Slack for a long time but now this space is so crowded that all seem the same.
@mulligan @nickabouzeid One advantage is having conversations within a doc (e.g. Google Sheets or Docs) while a group is editing and keeping the conversation tied to that document. I could see that being helpful for documenting decisions.

Still showing up as apart of an EAP for me.

It's opened up for me now!
This is going to be interesting. I use Flock.com (because a friend made it) and I use Slack a lot, but I will try this as I am a big Google Apps user and use it on all my teams.
Google entering this space means the space has become very real to them. However, we have seen Google make big entrances in big spaces and then slink out with their tail behind their legs (Google Plus, Google Keep etc). But given Google's dominance in apps, email etc, I see them being able to gain some traction here.
Pass the popcorn...
@ronsheridan What's wrong with google keep?
@duarteosrm I did not say there was anything wrong with Keep. To be clear, I don't see anything "wrong" with Keep. I was trying to make the point that Keep was Google's answer to a big market (Evernote, OnePoint etc...), and while it did jump out of the water in grand fashion, it quickly ended up as a shiny object floundering on the shore. While Keep is clearly not dead and has a strong community of users, it's performance has been underwhelming imo.
In fact, after Keep's launch, I started a blog about Keep. But I quickly lost interest. It seems that a lot of others did as well.
@ronsheridan Fair enough. I personally never saw it as a competitor to those more complete note taking apps, more a cloud based competitor to Apple Notes.
Always wanted Google to build this. Great work! Can we say HipChat killer as well? :P
@aria_bos Let’s be real - it’s a messaging product from Google. They’ll release 3 other products that do the exact same thing within 2 years and then end up abandoning all of them in 3.
@hayden_evans The fact that users like us would still use it because it’s engineered by Google. They rarely get into a space which doesn’t provide value to the users.
@aria_bos they also rarely support a messaging product beyond 3 years.
@hayden_evans Agreed. Why don't we use BBM?
@aria_bos In BlackBerry's defense, BBM was at least a solid, cohesive vision of messaging. BlackBerry screwed that up by stagnating on the software side of their phones.
@aria_bos @hayden_evans YUP
@hayden_evans How do you judge a new feature without using it? Did you already use hangouts chat? How could you say it’s not solid, or cohesive without using it?
None of this means that Google is the always the best or their products are par excellence.
It’s like finding the black dot in a cup full of milk. Too early to judge.
P.S. This is my last comment.
@aria_bos I think you have misunderstood my comment. I mentioned nothing about the quality of it as a new feature/application. It could be the best messaging product ever released - that doesn't make Google's approach to messaging applications and the support of those applications any less confusing though.
@aria_bos @hayden_evans Confusion about our messaging strategy, I hear that all the time. But mixing in BBM...now that is new and novel. Well done.
@happyinwater To make a point that everyone needs something new or a change. And, Google provides it. Everyone likes it; prefers saying bad about it. Weird.
With Slack prepping a new Android app, Flock raising $3.5 million and everyone else trying to compete in between, this is going to be extremely fun! Looking forward to trying this app by Google one day! :D
This is like what Microsoft is doing with Office 365 users and Teams. However, we are office 365 users and we don't use Teams at all because everyone is already on Slack,
can this run on my nokia 3310
@beenjamemes Hah! Well, Elon has better things to do but maybe ask him? 😬
@beenjamemes <3 your username!
Long overdue, though glad to see this coming together. Good work Brenden!
Prakash Chokalingam C
The wait is over 🤩
It will be available for non gsuite users?
@jordanslon doesn't appear so. You can't use @gmail accounts, nor any Google Apps Legacy accounts
@jordanslon only for Google Suits accounts.
@jordanslon Not yet, but working on that now
Another day, another messaging product from Google. Google Hangouts Chat. Their approach to messaging is so confusing at this point that just the name sounds ridiculous. It’s like a collection of all their prior failed attempts in a list. Next year it will be Google Allo Duo Hangouts Chat.
@hayden_evans At least this time, Google decided not to go ahead with a new app name. We should appreciate that. :D
@adheen_ajay Don't worry, they'll just release a new app with a new name that does the same thing in a few months at Google I/O. And once again, people will be confused about which one they should use, the user base will be split amongst two competing ideas, and Google will kill both off a year later after both fail to gain significant traffic over the other. Rinse and repeat.
@hayden_evans Hah! Lol. Google started this journey with GTalk, right? That was for text alone. Then Hangout: for text, images, and later live video, Allo: for the same but with google assistant- and without live video isn't? Now new Hangouts Chat for GSuite. Did I miss anything here?
@hayden_evans I actually liked Google Talk when it was launched 15 years ago as a response to Yahoo messenger(if anyone remember). I liked the app, the name, it was nice, clean, fast. Not sure why they didn't invest more time in that direction .
@hayden_evans My goal is to launch 9 more Google messaging apps this quarter, but I've only managed to launch Hangouts Chat and it is just the next gen Hangouts product. So I might not be getting exceeds expectations this cycle.
Paul de Fombelle
@hayden_evans Google Buzz Allo Voice Meet Duo Hangouts Chat Plus.
@hayden_evans Product may eventually be very cool, but "Hangouts Chat"? Try actually saying that name. Once wonders if Google employees ever speak out loud. ;)
@hayden_evans @happyinwater Love that you are good-humored about this. As a developer of one of the most popular bots for Slack (http://growthbot.org), I'm looking into what it might take to add support for Hangouts Chat. Wish me luck!
@hayden_evans @adheen_ajay Google Wave!
@hayden_evans you forgot... https://meet.google.com
@hayden_evans @dharmesh Let me know how I can help. First initial, last name, at google dot com.
@hayden_evans @scott_kennedy I HAVE IT TATTOOED ON MY NECK
@hayden_evans @sliver86 OK, so you can throw Allo and all the others at me, but throw me a bone with Meet. Hangouts Meet is for meetings and Hangouts Chat for messaging. Next gen Hangouts. That shouldn't be confusing.
Yes!!! Been waiting for these one. Im a daily active user for @Slack but Google lover and user.
I'll use it for shure!
What about threads?!
That's the most painful point of Slack, that's why our team uses Flowdock, threads inside Flowdock are just amazing, discussions are easy to maintain and don't go south when you discuss multiple features and work remotely...
@liviuanghelina Rooms (a.k.a channels) are threaded in Hangouts Chat
@happyinwater Okay I've tried it out..but the thread system is sorry...useless. I'll explain to you why: I have started a discussion yesterday and today the room was filled with other discussions when you reply to the discussion you started yesterday there is no way for others to see that you replied only if they scroll, the message doesn't show up in the chat fold!
That's very bad design! You are not able to follow any discussion you can't see the replies so the threads are useless!
You can do better than that!
This is good. Finally, we can get proper chatbots inside hangouts
Will this be charged separately to gsuite users or it is included in package of gsuite? if yes applied for both new and old users?
@evivz it's included as part of the standard suite, so nothing extra. But it's not available for any legacy Google apps users who are ok grandfathered free deployments
Excited to play around with this.
@benln Me too, but it won't seem to let me login. I have two different paid G Suite account for two different organizations. Neither of them will let me login to the new app. I can't login on mobile nor can I login on the desktop app. The desktop app just flashes momentarily and returns me to the Choose an account login page. The mobile app at least gives a message stating I need to talk to my admin. I am the admin and I can't find any info on it not being enabled or how to enable it. So far, they're not off to a great start, in my opinion.
@benln @wkeving Rolling out over this week, so give it a few days to get to your domain...
@happyinwater Thanks. I actually received the official email about it this morning that included that piece of info.
Pros: Seamless access with the 10 other Gsuite tools my team uses.
Cons: Google is eating the World.
