Thanks for hunting howdoesitlookonsocial!
Really excited to be on Product Hunt!
I've been involved with PH for a few months now and love the community.
Team Pilcro have been working super hard to get this side-project out and I think it will genuinely help people out.
What is it? Basically you can easily check how a post will look on different social sites before you post.
Hope you enjoy using it :D
And any feedback welcomed!
Great way to find out how your business looks across the social spectrum without having to go into all the apps individually. A real time saver for the SM marketer. Thanks @Pilcro.com
@pilcro @bucklitfest Thanks, so glad you like it!
Your URL immediately made me think it was a reputation management or SAAS company. 😂
Do you have any suggestions on how to optimize your post for each platform?
haha, thanks @dredurr as a side project we didn't put much thought into the name, as long as the URL was only 99 cents to buy. If you put your domain into the site then click the red button by each post, it will show you some optimisation tips right there
Tell us the story of how you guys came up with the idea.
What is your tech stack?
@dredurr Hey Deandre! Simple story really - We were trying to scale our marketing for https://www.pilcro.com and found it really frustrating that we couldn't see how a post would look in various places.
In terms of tech stack, check out this repo https://github.com/william-woodhead/simple-universal-react-redux . It it a simple boilerplate that outlines most of the tech we use. We also use serverless.com
@willam_woodhead cool! will check the boilerplate out. So many v confusing boiler plates out there
This is a really fantastic idea, I've been looking for something like this!
Great job!! 😊 Always wanted to use it
Simple, but useful tool! Thanks, can’t wait to give it a try for my sites.
Love the idea! I was recently looking for exactly this when my posts weren't previewing as I wanted. I tried my site and got error of 'Sorry! Could not make request.'. Other sites seemed to work though, but would be nice to get a better clue about what is wrong on my site :)
@mgrady can you share your site URL? Then I'll take a look
@mgrady this is a bit of a mystery right now. I am in London so it's getting late. I will look into this in detail tomorrow and get back to you.
@hugowoodhead No rush, I was just curious. Thanks for looking into it!!
@mgrady I have sorted this now. It is because we didn't have a user-agent in our request headers to your site and got a 403 response. It should work now. Seems like this might cause an issue when you post your site on Twitter though so that's worth exploring. (thanks to @willam_woodhead for helping me debug)
@willam_woodhead @hugowoodhead Thank you!!! I see it working now and can now see my issues. This is great!!!! Will be sharing this tool to others!
Nice work! I made a complementary service to this which lets you change that meta data: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/metashift
@jesalg looks like a great product. I agree with you that generic social links are confusing. That's why we put loads of effort into showing what the links look like on all the different social sites
Love this idea and actually need something like this. Could be an alternative to a hidden tool that FB and Twitter already provides for devs ;)
Only question is, does it get the latest metadata everytime or will it return a cache? Curious as this is a common issue across some platforms
@vincentloi1204 yes it is an alternative to the dev tools that some of the sites provide. I used those tools while building this product. My idea was to be able to check all the sites in one place and in a more visual way than a typical developer tool.
Yeah some site use cashing which can be really annoying. Not this tool though. It will always fetch your love meta data. I guess that makes it different from the sites but we thought that would be more useful for testing if you want to make changes and check before posting something
...similarly if you want to auto-generate those link preview images (open graph images) using screenshots of the page, see my static web host: https://www.roast.io/ - for an example, paste https://www.jonathanotto.com/ into https://social.pilcro.com/
Love it! Super useful! :)
Awesome job!! Thanks for making this. There's another fantastic tool called Picsee ( https://picsee.co/?lang=en) which is super useful for optimizing posts! Both are recommended.
Thanks @hsiang16 i tried picsee but didn't seem to work for https://www.producthunt.com/posts/how-does-it-look-on-social or https://www.pilcro.com/
This looks great!
Great work handling multiple platforms at once 😊
How are you handling changes in the social card visuals when they are changed by the services? Do you update those manually? Not trying to steal ideas or anything (I'm the creator of a similar tool), just generally curious how much of an overhead supporting a feature like this is 😊
@curiousigor we are using this tool at Pilcro to check our posts before we put them on social. Particularly as posts get cached so once you put something unwanted up then it is hard to make changes. If we start to get inconsistent results between our checking and our posts then we will update the app. I have built loads of test pages to see what I get on each of the sites. Love Hey Meta, really cool product. Nice work on that one. Happy to share notes.
@curiousigor Also, I'm note sure why Hey Meta doesn't show as a related product on the right hand side of this page, maybe I did the wrong tags when I posted or something like that
Additionally, if you want to preview posts on social media and then immediately schedule, you can use https://planable.io ;)
