Since @mkelly first told me about the idea for Flowlingo - I thought it was an incredible one. Learning by doing is always more impactful than just learning to learn... So why should it be different for a language? Just read the web and learn a language... or watch a show, learn a language, read a book, learn a language. So my question for you @mkelly -- what's coming next? More languages? More content? How do you think the product will evolve?

Thanks for hunting Flowlingo, @jsneedles! Our mission is to make effective language learning fun and accessible to everyone. Flowlingo is fun because you get to choose from real news, blogs, and videos to practice with. We strive to have something for everyone, so adding more content and more languages is our primary focus right now. We're constantly adding content and have plans to enable the Flowlingo community to help us find and add interesting books and videos faster. We support 22 languages already and are adding more—if a language you're interested in is missing from our app, let us know and we'll add it soon! Right now, the app is great for learning how to read and listen. We'd like to take the same principles and apply them to practicing writing and speaking as well in the future.

Do you guys support Chinese (Mandarin) ?
Matt Kelly
Maker
@jonathan_matus we do! Pinyin also appears when you tap on a word or phrase.
Jun Song
Wow. Just downloaded and took a spin. Well done guys. Question...how did you decide which sites/publications to add for each language?
Matt Kelly
Maker
Thanks @jundishes! We add sites that have high quality, frequent content and support a given language--meaning the content is created by professionals in that language. For example, New York Times is available in Chinese, Spanish, and English, so it's available for those languages in Flowlingo.
Jun Song
@mkelly gotcha, thank you. Keep up the great work!
Jenya Hovakimyan
great way to learn a language while reading posts you're actually interested in.

Eduard Steimle
Very Cool product! I totally agree that the best way to learn a language is by doing. Question: Is it going to stay free or are you planning to release a freemium version with in-app purchases?
Matt Kelly
Maker
Thanks @edi_steimle! While premium features are something we might look into, we want to always have a free version of Flowlingo to make it accessible to everyone.
ross macfarlane
interesting product - can see it being useful. suggestion. why hold a word to translate it? will a tap not do, or maybe it's a tech thing 🙂
Matt Kelly
Maker
@therealrossmac unfortunately tapping to translate wouldn't work because then you wouldn't be able to interact with links, buttons, etc.

Looks cool but is there any reason why non of my Android devices are compatible with it? I don't see how that can be for the Huawei Mate 9 running nougat. Like does the app need a 10-core CPU to run or what? I think there's an issue with your submission to the Play Store, it incorrectly flags devices as incompatible.
Matt Kelly
Maker
Hi @anna_0x! Sorry for the issue. Can you email us at contact@getflowlingo.com to get this fixed? Thanks in advance.
Anna Filou
@getflowlingo @mkelly Sure, I just sent you an email with my device specs and screenshots from the Play Store.

Thanks for the email and details @anna_0x! I'll follow up soon.

We’re excited to share our new language learning app, Flowlingo. Our app is built around a few simple principles: - The best way to learn is by doing. To practice reading in Spanish, you should read Spanish articles and books. To practice listening, you should spend time with TV shows, music, and podcasts. - Real content is better than “educational content”. Every language has an amazing variety of books, blogs, TV shows, and music. Choose whatever interests you, and Flowlingo will make it accessible, even if you’re a beginner. - The best way to stay motivated is to enjoy the process. With Flowlingo, you learn by doing the same things you already enjoy — in the language you want to practice. - Regular practice is key to improvement. There’s new content every day, and Flowlingo makes it easy to get a few minutes of learning while you’re on the go. - Real learning progress is better than gamification. It's not about collecting “points” or extending your “streak”. It's about the satisfaction of breezing through articles you used to think were difficult, and moving on to more challenging material. We hope you give Flowlingo a shot, and let us know what you think!

This looks *amazing*. This is definitely the way I learned English, and even German, back when I still had any working knowledge of that language. I see Danish will be added soon, and that just makes me crazy excited. Thank you!
Matt Kelly
Maker
Thanks @mierke88! Yes, we're adding Danish soon. If you have particular Danish websites that you already like, please let me know.

Just what I can say is only one "Perfect". Because a fact that I want to learn a lot of languages, in my idea this one will help me.

Thanks @babken_karapetyan! Let me know if you have any feedback (you can just tap "Help" in the app to chat).

So saw this "Every language has an amazing variety of books, blogs, TV shows, and music." but for Japanese it seemed your options were to browse websites, click on words to be translated (poorly - an article about Mars got the word order wrong and tried to say the planet was not like earth but had an earth-like atmosphere rather than the reverse), and some flash cards. Are the TV, Books, etc hidden? Or should there be some indication of which languages have what?
Matt Kelly
Maker
Hi @naweg, we'll be adding clarity for this in the app. In terms of translations issues, we're already in contact over email in order to understand what you're seeing.
Cristiano Paolini
Overall good idea . "Words" function doesn't work, it doesn't let me tap. No chance to opt-out or delete own personal data.
Matt Kelly
Maker
Hi @c_paolini1, sorry for the issues. please email us at contact@getflowlingo or in the app (just tap Help) to get the Words issues fixed and if you'd still like to have your data deleted.

Fantastic idea and a great product! Might want to change your sign up flow to AFTER users discovered the value of your app.. Duolingo is a great example to model after. And I had some problems with "De Telegraaf" requiring my cookie consent, but I can't seem to click the consent button... This will be my new go-to app for learning languages :))
Alexandru Rosianu
Cool idea, however at the moment it's unusable on the iPhone X because the tabs are underneath the bottom notch (the slider you use for "Home"). I remember you had a web app as well, what a pity I can't find it anymore as it was easier to use than the apps. Good luck!
Matt Kelly
Maker
@aluxian You're right, if you tap the black bar then you can't toggle to a couple of tabs. If you don't tap directly on the bar, the tabs work fine. We'll add some padding, thanks for pointing that out. We originally had a web app, but dropped support because Flowlingo contains a browser in the app now, which can't be supported in a mobile web app.
Raphaël Beaupied
Really great initiative. Definitely one of the best ways to learn a language in my opinion (being fully immersed). The app's performances could, however, be much better to be honest (very average on an iPhone 6 for example). Do you have any plan regarding this matter? Again, thank you for your hard work!
Matt Kelly
Maker
Thanks @raphael_b. Yes, there are a bunch of performance improvements that we're planning to ship soon.
