Hi guys, this is Marko, I’m the macOS developer behind Trailer app. I started developing Trailer because I wanted better tools to record and publish iOS app preview videos for App Store, Twitter etc. The original inspiration were open source projects and dribbble videos from Ramotion, which present iOS apps on a slanted perspective iPhone mockup. At the time I had a couple of friends that did After Effects and Premiere, but didn’t want to bother them every time I wanted to make a video for an app feature I wanted to post on Twitter. Quicktime + iMovie combination is great, but is really limited with options, so I made a proof of concept for Trailer in about a week, and that’s how it all started 😅 Trailer helps you enhance your app videos by presenting them in a more natural perspective than just a simple head on screen. Also, Trailer’s export options are constrained to standards of social media platforms, so you won’t have to lose time thinking and googling about constraints for every platform. Designers will appreciate the open file format .trailertemplate, with which you can distribute or sell your creations to your clients for them to use. Trailer comes with a bunch of free features out of the box 🎥 Video recording from iOS and macOS devices 🖥 Powerful video editor for creating mockup templates 📱 8 beautiful iOS device templates 🚢 Batch exporting for popular sites including iTunes Connect, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram And when you license it: 💦 Export videos without a watermark Soon we plan to roll out: 🔥custom gradients 🔥full timeline for sound and video + transitions 🔥text support 🔥keyframe animations 🔥image and video effects 🔥we also have special features planned which we will reveal as we go. We’re a really small bootstrapped team (Shiv, Marko and I), but we’re determined to bring you reliable, fast and best in class macOS software for your iOS, macOS, Android or Web app marketing needs. Trailer starts at $50/year per user, but we will price it accordingly. For our Product Hunt launch we are also including a special offer of coupons, which will buy you a first year subscription at a lower price. - First year 80% off subscription - PRODUCTHUNT80 (50 coupons until gone) - First year 50% off subscription - PRODUCTHUNT50 (100 coupons until gone) - First year 30% off subscription - PRODUCTHUNT30 (200 coupons until gone) Ask us any questions, we’d be happy to answer 🤗

@markohlebar Do you think you could get some templates specifically designed for gaming. In particular i'd like two videos next to each other showing this or that, with a bar down the middle. I'd also like the ability to have full screen action that then quick cuts to some other in game/app action. Would be super useful! Also if you set it up to also export for FB video Ads I think you would massively increase your market, exports should be 1:1, 4:5, 16:9, 9:16 and you cover almost every ad platform.
Tom Kinniburgh
@markohlebar I just bought it as I think it will be super useful for me. One small ask is that eventually you get it listed on the mac app store, simply for the distribution angle it make it so much easier. Licences can still be bought through your site or via the mac app store, but it just makes moving macs, keeping it updated and generally using it so much easier. Great idea - Think Gaming 😉

@kinnth thanks so much Tom! We are planning to launch on additional platforms, including App Store very soon, if all goes according to plan. Also as far as gaming / multiple screen support goes, we are going to be adding objects / timeline support so it should make it much easier for designers to design templates to their liking. We are adding microphone recording support later this week, also thinking about camera input for greenscreen streamers. Also, great input on the additional export options. We are generally thinking about adding a custom export options tool, where you can build / save your custom export frames, along with covering more platforms like dribbble etc.

It looks great! I wonder, why you made a subscription license for a year? I mean, it's a great tool, but just a tool. It should be at a fixed price, that you want, like $50.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@alexey_bukhtin thanks Alexey! We are still considering the price range, and pricing options. We'll collect data, see what our customers find acceptable, and react accordingly. Subscription model is nice because it should give us at least some confidence that we can continue having a steady-ish year to year cash influx so we can continue developing this.
Alexey Bukhtin
@markohlebar thanks for your message. Maybe I missed it, but it doesn't look that required years of development :)
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@alexey_bukhtin you'd be surprised ;) also, this is not the end, just the beginning 🔥
Alexey Bukhtin
@markohlebar maybe that's the problem. I didn't find your roadmap :) Anyway, it's a great tool. I wish you good luck!
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@alexey_bukhtin that's spot on, thanks Alexey!

@alexey_bukhtin I'll just add to this discussion, our plans are: - full timeline for sound and video + transitions - text support - keyframe animations - image and video effects We also have special features planned which we will reveal as we go.

@markohlebar @alexey_bukhtin The yearly licence fee allows the makers to improve the product continuously while you always have the latest version VS something like Reflector where you pay once and if you want the next version you need to pay again. I find this very frustrating, and it's quite intense on customers to ask them to take out their credit card every time they want to upgrade to the latest version. I'd rather have a yearly fee and always the latest version.
Fiess Edouard
@markohlebar I wish you had "PC version" on your roadmap... :D
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@alexey_bukhtin @fiessedouard yeah, that's where our thoughts were when we were considering subscription. I also don't like it when you have to pay for software upgrades, that model seems very dated to me. Also, this way we have at least some recurring revenue that we can count on, and it forces us to do a great job so that we keep those customers.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@fiessedouard there might be an online version popping up, which you could then potentially use from a PC ;)

@markohlebar > Subscription model is nice because it should give us at least some confidence that we can continue having a steady-ish year to year cash influx so we can continue developing this. I would say you should establish a "steady-ish" month to month revenue, so you can keep the business afloat. If that's your reasoning for year to year, there's no guarantee you'll collect enough customers to keep you through the first year. This yields a warning sign to me saying "we might have to refund you if we go down under in a couple of months". Accepting payments is like taking a credit. If you can't guarantee your business will sustain a year+, I think it's a really bad move to accept down payments for a year. No offence Marko, just sharing my thoughts. Good luck with your project.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@mkarnicki none taken Michal, thanks for your thoughts 🤗 My wording with year-to-year might have been misleading. With yearly subscriptions, you still get monthly turnover, we're not trying to attract all our clients in 3 days, and go silent the next 362 days in a year. Releasing software once a year and 3 updates in 3 years is a bygone era, and it should stay there along with Windows 2000. The way I think about this is - we deliver a quality product along with feature updates and bug fixes on a weekly basis, the clients are happy, and they are also happy to pay for the next year of using the product. If they are not happy, however, it is easy for them to unsubscribe, and then it is our loss. We might get less clients this way in the start, but if we keep the core customers happy, we will get more customers going forward, and the customers will get more value as well. Also, I think a comparison with taking bank credit is not really adequate. The app is pretty much free to use, bar removing the watermark, so anyone can try it out first before subscribing. We are most likely creating more than $50/year value for our customers, which is why they bought the subscription in the first place. Our payments provider, paddle.com are also very professional in handling refunds and unsubscriptions, so if anyone is unhappy with the product, it's easy for them to cancel the subscription or get a refund at any time. Hope this makes sense :)
Michał Karnicki
Hi @markohlebar , thanks for replying! It looks like Trailer has a $50/year price for the non-free plan. You mentioned it is easy to unsubscribe - do you refund the "unused period"? It is perfect if Paddle can do partial (or full) refunds, whichever is more appropriate. You missed my point claiming it's not adequate. Accepting payments is like a line of credit, that's how it works :) https://articles.braintreepayments.com/get-started/overview#merchant-account > A merchant account is similar to a line of credit, which is why we have you go through an application process when you sign up. This is because if you (completely theoretically speaking!) have yearly plan, accept payments, take money and run, while your servers stop working - you have a line of credit for the services that should continue to be offered until the end of the year. This is why Braintree reviews sign-ups so diligently. They have to understand if you're a trustworthy entity. Is that a better explanation of what I meant :)? Now, to be very clear, the above was a hypothetical example for explanation purposes and I have nothing bad to say about Marko :)!
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@mkarnicki ahh I see what you mean now, and that's a great point. However, if you buy a license for a year, the app will continue working on your Mac for a year, whether there is a server, a website, or any of our presence or not, because the product is a native app that does all the operations locally on a customers Mac. The only thing the customers would potentially lose if we'd "take the money and run" in that case is customer support. But that is absolutely not our goal, since we've invested way too much effort into making this, and we love this product too much to just let it go. As of now, we do not refund for an unused period, haven't really seen business do that, do you have a good example that we could take a look at? The license key is sent immediately after the license is bought and it's good for a year. We might change this policy to - until activated, but I think most customers enter the license right after they bought it, so that would probably be adding unnecessary complexity to our checkout process. Also, we're confident the product provides our customers immediate value which exceeds $50/year, and provides a means for 3rd party designers to make money by selling template files, so I think it's a win - win situation however you look at it 🙂
Michał Karnicki
@markohlebar d'uh! It's a software with 1 year license, not a SaaS type software. My bad, sorry for wasting your time Marko. Your pricing model totally makes sense. Like I said before, wish you the very best with your product. And thank you for your answers and clarifications, I appreciate it :). I'm sure you guys will have great customer support.

@mkarnicki no time wasted, thanks Michal!
Ramy Al-Kadhi
Market needs a tool like this, because these cost a lot to make if you license it, so well done. Agree with the pricing notes below, subscription for the year not necessary - believe it should have one off charges.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@ramy_alkadhi thanks so much Ramy! The app is actually pretty much free to use, bar the removal of watermark which you get by paying for the license. However, we will be adding a lot of features that will be license only, so maybe the subscription will have more sense then?
Ramy Al-Kadhi
@markohlebar That potentially. I also have another idea - giving the community access to creatives to develop a robust infographic. I'll sign up soon!
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@ramy_alkadhi yeah we definitely need some nice infographic explaining our path!
Adithya Shreshti
Looks like a great tools, making things a lot easier. Considering this currently is a subscription based product, what happens to the user who purchased now if you move to one-time priced category?
Adithya Shreshti
Also, curious to know what's on the roadmap, future plan?
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@adithya thank you so much! We would like to stick with the subscription model, which will unlock more advanced features in the app, and possibly offer a monthly sub options. However, if we ever moved to a different pricing method, we would make sure to handle it in a way that is fair to our customers.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@adithya also, these are currently on the roadmap, plus some advanced features we still have to polish, but we're sure will be a banger for designers and devs. Soon we plan to roll out: - custom gradients - full timeline for sound and video + transitions - text support - keyframe animations - image and video effects We will deffo add a roadmap infographic to our website as well 😉
Adithya Shreshti
@markohlebar Hi, thanks for your reply. I purchased after my comment earlier. When I install and launch the app, it just crashes within few moments with the error "This device does not support Metal rendering and cannot run Trailer" The license will be active from the day of purchase, is that right?
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@adithya Hi Adithya, sorry to hear that! Do you have another Mac machine that supports Metal? We will make sure you get refunded otherwise. Please send us your contact details to info@trailerapp.io, and I will talk to paddle for you. And yes, the license is active from the day of purchase.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@adithya just a small update, we received your subscription on Paddle, so let us know how you want to proceed, we'll be happy to assist you!

I was JUST asking my team what tool we could use to make our user tutorial video yesterday! We're checking out Trailer now, and we're already excited by the options and ease of use. Thanks for creating exactly what we needed, the day we need it.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@danabrain that's awesome, keep us posted if you need any help or have feature requests 😊

@markohlebar I just tried to make a video using the free option. It's simple and intuitive, but it crashed several times on its own before I could even choose a template, and I had to restart it to get functionality several times (e.g. to get the 'continue' button on the start screen to function, to get my phone connected, to get record to work). Wondering if you are aware of these bugs? Any suggestions?
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@danabrain sorry to hear that, and thanks for reporting! We will definitely check our crash reports and try to squash those crashes in our next release 🙂unfortunately, there are so many different configurations and systems, it's hard to fix all the issues before the release, but we do our best. I'll keep you posted on those fixes!

Please add Dribbble export.. I'll use it all the time.. Right now this tool is a one and done thing I'd use sparingly and it wouldn't be worth the money for me. It would be nice if it was just 1x per yr licensing fee like Sketch, Flinto..etc or something.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@koridhandy thanks! added "Dribbble export card" to Trello 🤩 as for the pricing, you can use the app free of charge, but there is a subscription license paywall for advanced features, which for now is only exporting without watermark, but we will be adding a lot of those features in the coming weeks / months.

Hi PH fam 👋 Super excited to finally launch Trailer. Enjoyed working on the product with Marko and Marko. Big thanks to all of you who participated and gave us feedback for the our betas (via upcoming/ship), it really means a lot. In addition to building features on Trailer, we plan to open source some handy modules and libraries. Here's a teensy JS library for responsive video modals (as seen on https://trailerapp.io) - https://github.com/TrailerApp/video-modal Feedback / requests / issues / PR's welcome. Help us make trailer better 🙌

This is a great idea. For ntwrkapp.com I had to overlay the screen capture on a template manually. Was a bit of a pain. I don't think it was a $50 / year kind of pain, but a pain none-the-less.
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@joshuapinter thanks a bunch! Would you be happier to pay per exported unwatermarked movie instead?
Joshua Pinter
@markohlebar Good question. On the one hand, I like the idea of subscription so future development is sustainable. But on the other hand, I like buying a tool and using it until there's some great new feature or whatever that makes me want to upgrade. Pricing is really hard, I know that first hand. With ntwrk, it's free with a one-time in-app purchase to unlock all the pro features. I'll be moving that to a smaller monthly subscription in version 2. Reason is because once those pro users buy it, there's no continued motivation or revenue to support development, unless you continue to get *new* customers at the same, if not faster, rate. My conclusions: - if your app is wildly popular, one-time works just fine because money keeps rolling in as new users keep signing up. - if your app is a bit niche, subscription makes more sense because the number of users will be small and rate of growth likely will slow down as you saturate the smaller market. - if your app supports a standalone upgrade path, unlike the typical App Store model, then both one-time (e.g. VMWare/Screenflow) and subscription (e.g. Sketch/Office 365) can work. (Sorry, having a bit of a brain dump right now.) To answer your actual question, I'd rather not pay per export, especially for a native tool. I'd rather pay $50 up front and use it as much as I want. Then, if you add features to Version 2 that I'm interested in, I'd pay $30 to upgrade, or something. If I don't need anything in Version 2 then I'd just keep using Version 1. Hope that helps.

@joshuapinter thanks so much for taking the time to write this up, you could probably expand it to a medium post if you haven't done that already :) Pricing is really hard indeed, and we will definitely consider different pricing options. Services similar to ours that are online tools are paid far above our ask, and on the other hand, indie Mac apps that are tending to go for $20 a pop and less. We are trying to go for the middle ground, have a clear pricing without gimmicks, which is fair to us, so we can remain sustainable, and the customers as well. Currently the app is basically free to use forever, bar the watermark removal, but as you said, the licensed tier will have premium features, like the timeline, keyframe animation, text, video effects etc.

Are the discount codes still available? Also, when will the next updates be? And how can we get Android templates? Am interested in purchasing.
Jean
@maz1b just used the 80% off coupon and still working :) Bit of a no brainer at that price!
Marko Hlebar
Maker
@maz1b @getjeandotcom thanks for that Jean, we really appreciate it! Mohammad, there are coupons still available, so you're free to use them 😊! Due to popular demand we will be adding Android templates in very near future. Also, Trailer lets you use 3rd party mockups to create your own templates, so you can search the internet for free mockups or buy some. There were already 2 updates since the 1.0 release, we will probably release at a steadier pace, probably weekly or biweekly after that 🙂
