A must for entrepreneurs and board members. Newbie or a veteran? It doesn't matter. This book covers the essentials: What is a board? Its purpose? Who to have on the board, how to recruit them, details to pay attention to when recruiting, dealing with conflicts, selling the startup etc. It is all in here. If you're a veteran, this will refresh your memory and give you unique viewpoints from "guest authors" from accomplished startups, VC firms etc.The only reason why I give it 4 stars is because the book revolves/uses term "VCs" all the time, but doesn't mention "angel/seed investors." Nevertheless, the book is very useful in both scenarios. My co-founders, investors and fellow board members will be reading this.P.S. The book has a nice group of checklists in the appendix to help you out in utilizing the material.

Brad is unbelievably knowledgeable and -- more than that -- generous with his knowledge. This is one of many books he's written to help entrepreneurs. I've read all of them, and I've found this one to be particularly useful in helping us set the right tone with our board. Brad makes practical recommendations throughout that we have put into use and invariably they've helped tremendously. Highly recommended to anyone interested in how to run a board effectively!

The "board" is that mysterious group that meets in closed smoky rooms, sipping expensive scotch and making the decisions for your company? Now we get a "fly on the wall" look at what the board actually should be doing, and how.Great advice on what makes a good board and how a bad one can kill a great company. Keys to the kingdom:How do you pick board-members?Board compensation, who much? What is the power of the board? What can you do, and what should you do when it goes wrong? This book is mostly about corporations; I was looking for more on Not For Profit; but even with that it was worth the time; it was a great read.

I just posted a long review of this book to my blog. The short version of that review: Whether you are hesitating to build your board or already actively managing it, read this book. Underline its diagnoses, and put asterisks next to its prescriptions. Its content is most relevant to those who have (or may soon have) investors on their boards, but much is also relevant to other types of boards. As you face the issues Feld and Ramsinghani raise, you will hopefully save yourself much time and unnecessary pain down the road by knowing common board-management pitfalls and how to prevent or resolve them.

I am a first time startup founder and CEO. Over the past three years, our company grew from 4 people to over 100 and our board meetings evolved with the scale of the business as well. This book was critical in helping me learn how to navigate the dynamics of the board and operate at a much higher level than I normally would have. It's so good that I re-skim sections of it right before a board meeting to mentally switch from my operator CEO hat to the board member CEO hat.

Brad Feld and Mahendra Ramsinghani have presented a great educational tool to startup business as a whole, its investors including venture capital and the Boards of these Business. Having been in business for several decades, which include board occupation, I know as a matter of fact, this book is going to educate the startups in substantive manner. The startup business, more often than not, is grappled with multiple problems, namely, evolving products, marketing challenges, financial stress, inability to acess cheap funds and inadequate leadership, to name a few. The last problem the startup business want is to be confronted with a hostile and all-powerful board. The authors of this book, have dealt with this real issue in the most exhaustive and practical manner, so that the business does not fall prey to incompetent or greedy members of the board.Though I belong to an other country, the truth of the messages in the book is so overwhelmingly strong, I commend the startup business have a hard look at the book before recruiting the first member of his/her board.

Also, Brad explains what the CEO should look for in new potential board members. Startup Boards covers how to effective run a board meetings and how to get stuff done during a board meeting. The right board of directors can help a CEO manage and grow an business enterprise. Also, boards can help the CEO recruit new talent to grow the business enterprise.I highly recommend Startup Boards for current CEOs and any aspiring CEO.

I think for many entrepreneurs that raise early stage investment capital, a Board of advisors and/or Directors "falls into place" as opposed to being thoughtfully and methodically developed. This book is a must for those entrepreneurs (particularly in the early stages) as it does an excellent job of breaking down the Board into core component parts - composition, structure, expectations, alignment, meetings, etc. The book is not overly complex, fun to read and full of "aha" moments on how to make the Board more effective that have practical applications. Great examples and full of material I expect to continue to reference throughout my career.
